20 August 2007- The next stage of coming out is to tell someone else about how you feel. This is normally a feeling you have inside you and you just want to share your news with someone. However you need to give this step some thought. Think about who you trust and feel comfortable with and whether he or she will be supportive. Ask yourself why you want to do it. If you want to take this step simply because you feel ready and are proud of who you are, then-great. But if your intention is to shock or hurt someone it is best to take another look at your motive. Many choose a friend or sibling to tell or even write them a letter. But it can be a good idea to test the water first. There is probably little point in simply blurting out the news to someone who you think might have a problem with your being gay. You have to face the possibility that who you tell may not react well to the news. You could loose a friend, or they might tell others before you have chance to. So plan ahead and pick a time that’s right. The news may come as surprise to some people, especially if you have been leading a straight life before, where as others may have known all along. Either way, they are likely to have lots of questions for you – so be prepared.
