Alliance to protest gay marriage

06 Oct 2006- Johannesburg - The Marriage Alliance - which opposes recognised gay unions - will stage a march in Pretoria on Saturday in support of a "traditional definition" of marriage.

"The Marriage Alliance is expecting thousands of people to march through the streets of Pretoria, in support of a constitutional amendment that will preserve the traditional definition of marriage," the organisation said in a statement on Friday.

The alliance was calling on parliament to amend the constitution to recognise marriage as a "voluntary union between a man and a woman".

The organisers of the march have urged their supporters to refrain from expressing negative or anti-homosexual sentiments.

Strict control would be maintained over the contents of posters and banners.

The marchers will make their way to the Union Buildings where they will hand a memorandum to government representatives.
