Gay parade takes firm stance against hate crimes
06 Oct
2007- Johannesburg, South Africa- This year's Gay
Pride parade has concluded its walkabout in Rosebank, Johannesburg, as part of
celebrating and raising awareness about homosexuality. A member of the
organising team, Tania Harford, says this year's activities are focussed on
addressing hate crimes against gays and lesbians.
Harford says the burning issue in communities is hate crimes on people's sexual
orientation.
Earlier in the day, hundreds of people braced the cold weather to attend the
parade at the Zoo Lake. Some wore paper bags over their heads so as not to be
identified. Others wore bright and daring attires as part of the event.
Even families poured in at the lake endorsing the parade. The first ever African
gay and lesbian pride parade took place in Johannesburg in 1990.
