Zambian gays gather to look into the future of their sexuality
24 Feb 2006- Its been over seven years
since the ban of the first gay organisation in Zambia called ‘ Legatra’.
Now some former Legatra members and more out coming gays have been
gathering together to look into the future of homosexuals in Zambia.
Chisanga who is co-ordinating in Zambia said, its sad that most of the
strong people that really came out of the closet that time and stood out
for the rest of homosexuals here in Zambia, left for fear of
persecution, but it’s also encouraging that where ever they are they
still support and contribute towards our meetings.
Chisenga went on to say that its
still a risk to be gay out here in Zambia, but this will always be like
this in most of the African countries, we just have to stand up for it,
just like seven years ago Francis Chisambisha came out of the closet and
Ndanji Chola went on to work on representing Zambian gays abroad, we
need to carry on and continue what these two guys started.
All the meetings are all held under discreet so as not to have other gay
guys here to feel uncomfortable. There's a lot of gays out now in Lusaka
and thanks to the first Zambian gay website that’s really making more of
us feel free to communicate through others and the most important of all
is putting Zambian gays on the gay map by having Ndanji Chola
representing us at the Geneva ilga- world -conference in March.
As Zambian fruits we are here and we will still fight until that time
when everyone of us is free to express our sexuality.
