Zambia’s MP son speaks out on his homosexuality

11 Oct 2006- Lusaka- Its not that easy for me to come out of the closet to the public all because of my father’s position as a member of parliament in the Zambian government and the Zambian law regarding homosexuality.

My father knows that I’m gay, its been hard for me and the family too to accept that Iam what Iam, but my father has strongly advised me not to come out. I know this is not what I want but its lives me no choice with what the Zambian law says about homosexuality.

The Zambian government is aware about homosexuality in the country, especially in the capital city Lusaka. You can come across gays and lesbians around but it has not been easy to communicate and there is no chance of gathering for meetings to catch up and establish friendship for fear of being arrested and facing persecution. There is not support hence everything is done in secrecy.

This is why most Zambian gays and lesbians are leaving all the time they get a chance so as to express their sexuality in western countries and South Africa. I must say that I’m also one of these guys leaving because its really going to be a battle if I come out openly to the public as I’m not assured that I will be protected by the Zambian law.

Trendsetters is a youth-run newspaper which I thought they would report on all issues, but for some reason they have rejected most issues that regard homosexuality.

Africanveil has become the first ever gay and lesbian website that more of youths are communicating through regarding homosexuality issues. It was much easier for me to express myself on Africanveil.

Please note that Africanveil has not given out the name for security reasons.
